Enjoying sex during pregnancy

Vaginal Care

Sex is undoubtedly an important part of human needs. Is it safe to have sex during pregnancy?

As far as you do not have any problems with your pregnancy (among others: history of miscarriage, shortened cervix, bleeding or placenta previa), it is completely okay to enjoy sex.

In fact some women become aroused more easily due to hormonal change and find sex more enjoyable during pregnancy. Increased blood flow to the pelvic area can cause engorgement of the vagina and heighten the sensation of intercourse. However the effects are more or less subjective. Other women may experience some abdominal cramps during or after an intercourse.

Partner response. Since sex is a mutual activity, the response from your partner regarding your pregnancy is an integral part of sex enjoyment. Many people find their pregnant partner as beautiful and desirable as ever. However some factors like the worry about hurting the baby or just the feeling of having sex in the presence of your unborn baby, can easily affect your partner's desire. It is always wise to talk to your doctor for an advice if you feel necessary.

Definition of intercourse. Hormonal change can greatly affect your mood for sex. Some women find themselves craving for sex but when the time comes they are not in the mood anymore. In the first and last weeks, it is normal that you perhaps lose your interest in sex.
It is important however to maintain loving each other physically. Enhance your definition of intercourse by showing your affection to your partner in many different ways: kissing, cuddling, stroking and touching.

Sex position. As pregnancy progresses, there are different things that happen to your body that bound to change your sex life. Experiment with your partner for positions that will maximize your comfort and control the depth of penetration.

Here are some tips for making love when you are pregnant:
  • During the last weeks, you may find missionary position difficult. Try sitting on your partner's lap or both lying side by side.
  • Get on top of your partner. The position will allow you to control the amount of penetration.
  • Lie side by side which limits the penetration shallow.
  • Try kneeling and have him entering you from behind.
  • When you feel discomfort, you may want to use lubricants.
