Everyone’s heard of the Kama Sutra, and many have heard something slightly quirky about Tantra or Tantra Yoga. So it’s not surprising I’m often asked if everyday yoga on the Northern Beaches will help improve their sex-life! The short answer is: … maybe. There are many ways in which the regular practice of yoga will help improve your sex life. (Although one branch of yoga counsels “abstinence” as a virtue, this is usually given a more liberal interpretation these days so you are certainly allowed to have a sex life if you do yoga!)
First, it helps you develop awareness and control of your whole body, so that you often develop heightened sensation and attention to what is happening to your body. It trains you to “be in the moment” and totally involved with what is happening now, rather than worrying about what might be about to happen or what went wrong with the day just past.
Second, yoga postures teach us to breathe properly and consciously to bring more energy, openness and aliveness into our bodies and minds, which helps us to live more open-heartedly. This is a definite plus in any relationship. Breathing techniques can also prolong or alleviate sensations and are useful for building and maintaining sexual tension or charge.
Lastly, yoga postures teach us to firm or support the pelvic floor muscles which can certainly heighten sexual sensation. (This technique is similar to the Kiegel squeezes mothers are taught after child-birth.)
So I never promise a sizzling sex-life just by doing yoga regularly, but it should be clear that there are many ways in which the physical aspects of yoga can definitely improve what happens in the boudoir!
